Crushing Debt Without Sacrificing Fun
Crushing Debt Without Sacrificing Fun
We all know the struggle of feeling guilty about spending on non-essentials while striving to become debt-free. (Those of us who have had debt, anyway.) The truth is, an all-or-nothing approach can lead to burnout and demotivation. In this post, let's explore how to shift our mindset and discover the empowering concept of budgeting for fun to attain financial freedom without sacrificing enjoyment.
Embracing Empowerment on the Debt-Free Journey - Turning Guilt into Motivation
Living on a budget shouldn't feel like punishment. Remember, you don't work for the budget – your budget works for you. It's time to embrace empowerment and relish life, even on your debt repayment journey. By altering your perspective, you can maintain motivation and make steady progress towards your financial goals.
You are not a bad person and do not deserve to miss out on life just because you've chosen (or been forced) to pay something off over time. I believe we make the best decisions we can based on our circumstances and the options we know are available to us at the time. Sometimes emergencies happen, like medical bills or car repairs, and we have no choice but to make payments.
The Cut Everything Approach: Mathematical Speed versus Emotional Well-being
While cutting out unnecessary expenses may theoretically speed up debt repayment, it can also lead to feelings of deprivation and burnout. Sustaining a lifestyle where you constantly deny yourself is not feasible in the long run.
For example, I used to go months without spending on anything "unnecessary", and pay a little extra on all the debt payments. Eventually, however, I'd end up paying for a trip, course, or gifts with a credit card and have even more debt to pay off. The worst part about it was that I didn't even fully enjoy what I was doing when I splurged, because I felt so guilty for spending money on fun things when I had debts to pay.
Moreover, tomorrow is not guaranteed – what if something happens before you reach your debt-free goal? I hate to bring this up because we don't like to think about it, but we really don't know how long we have on this earth. When I was in the hospital with sepsis, we had no idea if I would make it or not. I couldn't help but think about all the places I'd wanted to visit and the things I'd wanted to do with my daughter.
With this new perspective, I realized I needed to find a balance between responsible spending and enjoying life in the present moment.
The Balanced Lifestyle Approach Prioritizing Enjoyment and Motivation
This approach acknowledges that mental well-being and motivation are essential factors in achieving long-term financial success. While it may result in slower debt reduction compared to extreme austerity measures, it allows for budgeting that aligns with your values and personal fulfillment.
Striking a Balance
The key lies in striking a balance between essential and non-essential expenses so that you can enjoy guilt-free experiences within a reasonable budget.
Whenever possible, when you are creating your monthly budget, set aside a small percentage as a Fun Fund. I recommend 10% if you can swing it; if not, simply set aside whatever you can! Even $20/week of guilt-free spending can make a big difference in feeling like you're living vs. just surviving.
Prioritize experiences and things that bring you and your family joy. Especially experiences that you can share with your loved ones. By making intentional choices, you can live a fulfilling life while progressing towards debt freedom.
Crushing Debt While Living Life
In conclusion, the key to long-term success lies in finding a balance between debt repayment and enjoying life. Adjust your mindset, explore diverse approaches, and find a middle ground that works for you. Remember, self-care is crucial even on a budget. Prioritize your well-being while working towards your goals and witness how an empowered mindset transforms your life.
